Thomas Neumann at ESPN.com wrote a great article about the Sin City Blackjacks.
When a new sports franchise is born, the owners must carefully consider the name of the team.
After all, the entire identity of the organization will be built upon that moniker. A good name doesn’t guarantee success, but a bad one can start a team down the road to failure. With that in mind, a minor league football team in Las Vegas is doubling down on the gambling culture of its home base with open arms.
“The ownership wanted to gear the name toward the city itself,” Blackjacks general manager and head coach Anthony Bartley said. “They really wanted something that would truly stand out. Let’s face it — nearly everybody here in Vegas gambles. One of the games of choice is blackjack. And Vegas is already known as Sin City. So let’s just take the themes that are already in place, put them together and make it happen.”
We wanted to share this article regarding one of the athletes that we work with, Evan Song.
EVAN SONG EARNS ElITE TOP 6 RANKING’ IN· U.S.A. Evan Song earned elite status as the No.6 ranked junior tennis player in the United States. Born in Las Vegas and raised in Henderson, Song’s No. 6 ranking is the highest ranking of a male Nevada player in the Boys 18s age division in over 20 years.
Coached by former UNLV-standout Henner Nehles, Song has competed all oyer the globe including the Australian Open’ and the World Super Championships in Japan. Unlike most top international players, Song chose to stay in his hometown to train and develop his game. He trains at the International Tennis Centre in Las Vegas. When asked why he didn’t move out of state to a Bollettieri-type training academy, Song said, “My family is here, I love Vegas and my team Is awesome. I’ve got a world-class coach in Henner, an unbelievable movement and strength coach in Korey Goodwin, the world’s best Physio in Scott Pensivy, a super-lefty coach in Adain Carey, an amazing active-release chiropractor in Dr. Jon Petrick, and top-tier high-performance tennis guys like Les Banas, Sergio Urbina, Kevin Bradley, Stephane Matheu, Joel Kielbowicz, Brian Wilson, and Sam Aparicio, who have helped me develop my game in Vegas.”
Song started playing tennis at the age of 10 and his passion and positive attitude for the game are exemplary. He has been awarded four national and international “Best Sportsmanship” awards including the prestigious Easler Bowl Sportsmanship Award.
When asked to sum up the game of tennis, Song said, “Tennis- at the top level is the toughest game in sports. I’m out there all by myself sometimes for 4 hours in a long match with no one to talk 10. You’ve got to love to suffer otherwise you can’t compete at the top level. I train hard every day. How far that takes me in the game 1 will accept that.”
