During my days as a physical therapy student in Utah, a group of us would spend three hours each Saturday visiting folks at the local nursing home/rehab hospital. Afternoons were spent reading books, singing songs, cracking jokes, and reminiscing about families. We soon became friends! Some weeks, I would enter the room to continue our conversation from last week, and I’d find them fast asleep, too tired to talk, too ill to eat, and when I did catch them on a good day, oftentimes it would take a few minutes for them to remember who I was!

Then it dawned on me. I wonder how our newfound friends looked and felt when they were our age? What were their health habits, and what lead up to the eventual deterioration of their health, which included diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, knee/hip replacements, crippling back pain, dementia? And one more question that has never left the back of my mind…would I eventually end up in this state of health??

Determined to find out my answers, I used our conversations to find out more about their pasts. I even asked if they wouldn’t mind showing me pictures of when they were younger. Strong, healthy, fit, happy young men and women was all that I saw. So how in the world had they arrived to this point in their health, confined to this room, this bed, this limited lifestyle?

Knowledge. That was the missing piece. They simply did not know, they told me, that WHAT they were eating could affect their health down the road. They did not know HOW to tailor and stay consistent with an exercise program aimed at keeping muscles toned and bones strong. They did not know WHERE to find answers, because everywhere they looked, they heard something different. So eventually, they gave up. They ended up finding comfort in the belief that genetics lead to these gradual declines in function and comfort, and that health and wellness was simply, “not my destiny.”
